If you’ve used FaceTime before, you know that it’s an Apple-proprietary video conferencing app, used on Apple iPhones, iPod touches, iPads and Mac computers. What makes it special is that the person you’re conferencing with doesn’t need to have an iPhone – it’s fine as long as they have an Apple device and a wireless or 3G connection! Here’s how to use FaceTime on iPhone 4 or 5.

A while ago, phone companies did not allow FaceTime calls over 3G or 4G networks, owing to intense bandwidth consumption. That’s not the case any longer. You can go ahead and make FaceTime calls as long as your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network or over 3G or 4G cellular networks. One thing, though; FaceTime does consume a lot of bandwidth, so unless you don’t mind using up your monthly 3G or 4G subscription, use Wi-Fi connectivity to make FaceTime calls.

These steps show you how to use FaceTime on iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. The steps are the same, though a couple of tiny variations might be there depending on which version of iOS you use – 4 or 5.

  1. Make sure that FaceTime is turned on your iPhone 4 or 5. If it’s not turned on, go to your Home screen and tap the Settings app.
  2. On iPhone 5, tap the FaceTime optionin your Settings screen to open it. On iPhone 5, tap the FaceTime app, and then move the FaceTime slider till it glows green, or indicates Onstatus.
  3. Make sure your Wi-Fi is turned on before you start your FaceTime call. iPhone 5 supports 4G/4G LTE as well, so if you’re using this, make sure it’s turned on.
  4. Now, select your friend’s contact from your Address Book and tap their name.
  5. You’ll see the camera-like FaceTime button on your friend’s page. Tap it to FaceTime your friend. Note: If you see a question mark on your friend’s FaceTime icon, it means that he or she may not be using an Apple device that is compatible with FaceTime.
  6. To end your FaceTime call, tap the End button you see on the FaceTime screen.

Notes:

  • When your FaceTime call begins, your camera turns on automatically and you’ll see yourself on your iPhone’s screen. When the call connects, you’ll see your friend’s face next to yours on the screen.
  • You will notice a green button that resembles a phone in the bottom left corner of your FaceTime page, which indicates the call is on.
  • You can manipulate the camera button on the right to shift the camera angle as you like it.

Some times the app on iPad and Mac will stop working and crash down, You can use the Force Quit Mac Application feature to star again without wasting your time.
